Groundbreaking 3D mammograms now available at MD Imaging

Bringing innovative medical advances to the greater Shasta area, Redding-based MD Imaging is proud to announce it will now be providing 3D mammography (Tomosynthesis) to patients. The groundbreaking imagery greatly improves the ability for radiologists to detect breast cancer, as well as greatly reduces false-positive and false-negative results – ultimately providing better patient care.

Tomosynthesis – what is it?
Tomosynthesis, or 3D mammography, is a revolutionary screening and diagnostic tool designed for early detection of  breast cancer that can be done in conjunction with a traditional 2D digital mammogram. It allows doctors to examine breast tissue one layer at a time – like pages in a book.

The X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the patient’s breast, taking multiple images. Then, a computer produces a 3D image of the tissue in one millimeter slices, providing greater visibility for the radiologist to see heightened detail.

“3D Tomosynthesis can reveal breast abnormalities that 2D mammograms alone may overlook,” says Eva Bauer, M.D., Fellowship Trained Breast Chief Radiologist at MD Imaging – Women’s Imaging Center. Bauer adds, “Call-backs for additional views and biopsies can cause extreme, unnecessary anxiety for women. We want to help alleviate that, while providing the best possible care in the North State,” further explaining that the cutting-edge technology results in fewer unnecessary biopsies, and worrisome call-backs for patients.

Who should get 3D mammography
Women over 40 who have dense breast tissue, and women who are at high-risk for breast cancer, based on health and family history, are ideal candidates for 3D mammography.

What to expect during a 3D mammogram
3D mammography is performed at the same time as the standard 2D mammogram is performed. There is no additional compression required and takes only a few seconds longer for each view.

Taking only four seconds,  patients receive minimal X-ray exposure during the exam – about the same amount as a traditional mammogram (approved by the FDA).
