The exhibit “Faces of Afghanistan” is now showing at the North Valley Art League Gallery in Caldwell Park, Redding, through March 30. It consists of nearly thirty photographs and watercolors by the husband-and-wife team of Bob and Miriam Weissberg.
The photographs depict the people of northern Afghanistan during a relatively peaceful period in the country ten years before the Soviet invasion of 1979. Seen in the photos (taken by Weissberg during his tour as a Peace Corps Volunteer teacher) are people from the great variety of ethnic groups that make up the population of northern Afghanistan. Miriam has captured realistic views of some of these unforgettable people and places in her watercolor paintings.
The striking images that appear in “Faces of Afghanistan” serve to remind us that there are real people behind the news stories that we read and see coming from the war zone, people not so different from ourselves, doing their best to carry on with their daily lives under difficult conditions.
