Pink Box Bakery

Tiramisu, cannoli cake, cream puffs, spumoni cookies. These are just a few of the delectable treats from Pink Box Bakery that you missed if you styed home last Sunday. Pink Box was one of the incredible local food producers featured during A News Cafe’s “Harvest Sampler,” a feast of locally sourced, locally prepared food, beer and wine.

Pink Box was born when owner Shelly Mitchell and her son decided to parlee years of catering and pastry experience into a new career and much-needed new adventure. Although custom cakes and catering have taken off, Shelly is nostalgic and envisions her bakery as the place to come for an old-fashioned pink box brimming with pastries, cookies and canoli straight from her cases.

I talked to Shelly recently about her culinary adventure.

What made you decide on a brick and mortar bakery?

A brick and mortar bakery was the only option in my mind. It took almost two years to get there but we finally opened our doors on Valentine’s Day this year. Our goal is to be an old fashion family bakery where you can come in and get anything you want. This will take time but as more people find out about us the more products we will keep on hand. Our motto is “If you want it, we’ll bake it!” We will make just about anything they want.

Cooking is an art and baking is a science. Agree or disagree?

Both, baking is definitely a science but decorating and presentation is an art.

What is your favorite thing to bake?

I have many, but I would say our crème brulee. Watching people eyes light up as we torch the sugar to order is always fun. I also really like making all of our puff pastry desserts and cream puffs.

What has been your most interesting baked request so far?

I would say our chocolate covered bacon. A customer called to order it and we delivered. Honestly, it was on my list of things to make  anyway and it just gave me a reason to do it. If you have not tried it, you should. It really is good.

What advice do have for novice bakers who want to do it for a living?

I would tell anyone wanting to be in this profession to plan on working very long hours with modest profit margins and a whole lot of satisfaction.

What is your next creation going to be?

Besides working on our Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas treats I am also working on the idea of dessert pasta.
