Whiskeytown National Recreation Area announced today that a limited number of firewood collection permits will be issued on May 5, 2012.
Dead and down wood within Whiskeytown is usually left to recycle through the ecosystem or used for other purposes within the park. However, storm damage and other factors have caused an excess amount of wood to accumulate near the Whiskey Creek Group Picnic Area. Approximately 75 cords of dead, downed and mostly bucked wood is available, primarily consisting of knobcone pine.
Permits will be issued on site, on a first-come, first-served basis on Saturday May 5 from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. Permits will cost $20 and allow the taking of up to one cord of wood. One permit per household please. Permitees will be responsible for loading the firewood and must take all the wood from an assigned area.
To get to the firewood area from Redding: Take highway 299 west to Whiskeytown Lake. Cross the one bridge that crosses the lake. Turn right (north) onto Whiskey Creek Road. Follow Whiskey Creek Road to the end of the lake. Turn right onto Pioneer Drive and follow signs to the wood area.
Volunteers from the Shasta County Fire Safe Council and Anderson Amateur Radio Club will be on hand to assist with coordinating the event, and to remind participants that wild fire is everybody’s business.
