Sliders made from locally raised beef, local wines and beer, an auction featuring artwork and craft items made by local artists, and music provided by the local Prima Donna Bongo Band: Local is truly the word for Shasta Land Trust’s annual Wildways Kickoff party, scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, February 25, at the Redding Senior Citizen’s Hall.
The theme for this year’s Kickoff Party is “Picnic at the Ranch,” a reference to the working ranchland that Shasta Land Trust focuses on protecting with its conservation easements. To date, the land trust has protected over 21,000 acres of land on seven different ranches within Shasta County.
Shasta Land Trust is dedicated to conserving open space, wildlife habitat, and agricultural land in the region, so the tie to local products and businesses is a natural one, said Ben Miles, Shasta Land Trust Executive Director.
Whether you’re a Shasta County native or a recent import, you’re bound to have fun at Shasta Land Trust’s biggest annual event. Sliders prepared by Kathy’s Deli in Redding and made from Prather Ranch beef top a menu of heavy hors d’oeuvres. The Prima Donna Bongo Band, a local folk rock group, is sure to get your feet tapping. Sometime between eating, drinking, and dancing, you’ll want to take a look at the handcrafted jewelry, weekend getaways, handmade woodcraft items, paintings, photographs, and other items available in the silent auction. And you’ll need to grab a raffle ticket from Doni Chamberlain-Greenberg, publisher of Redding-based A News Café, for a chance to win one of several great gift baskets prizes.
Of course, the highlight of the Kickoff Party is that it is the first opportunity to purchase tickets to other exclusive Wildways events held in our area throughout the year. These range from stargazing campouts and guided hikes across private ranches to food and wine parties and history tours. The most popular Wildways events often sell out during the Kickoff Party, so you need to be present to make sure you claim your spot.
Tickets for the Wildways Kickoff Party cost $25 and may be purchased by calling Shasta Land Trust at (530) 241-7886, visiting the Shasta Land Trust website at http://www.shastalandtrust.org, or stopping by the office at 1918 West Street in Redding during business hours. Tickets will also be available for $30 the night of the Kickoff at the Redding Senior Citizen’s Hall, 2290 Benton Drive.
