Fire crews from the Bureau of Land Management plan to conduct a 20-acre prescribed fire this week in the Little Grass Valley area south of the Buckhorn Station area along Highway 299 between Redding and Weaverville.

Officials hope to complete the project on Tuesday or Wednesday, Nov. 15 or 16. The burn will be ignited only if weather allows for safe and successful burning and smoke dispersion.

Smoke is expected to drift in a southerly direction from the project. It might be visible from Lewiston and from Highway 299 for up to four days.

Agency officials said the fire is intended to reduce brush and small trees to encourage growth of healthy trees. Reduction of this understory growth is also designed to make the forest more resistant to wildfire.
