Arcata Mother Arrested Following Infant’s Death

Rebecca Mcpherson

On Saturday October 15, 2011 at about 9:33 a.m., officers from Arcata Police Department responded to the 1600 block of 27th Street on the report of a possibly deceased infant. Medical personnel arrived on scene prior to the officer’s arrival and confirmed the infant was deceased.

During the subsequent investigation officers determined the 4-month-old infant was in bed with her Mother, Rebecca Mcpherson, while Mcpherson was blow drying her hair. The blow dryer was left on when Mcpherson fell asleep resulting in the child’s death. The deceased infant was discovered in the morning and the police were called.

Officers arrested 29 year old Rebecca Mcpherson of Arcata for felony Child Endangerment. Mcpherson was booked and lodged in the Humboldt County Correctional facility.

Without more information, this looks like a very sad and unfortunate case of faitigue causing terrible consequences. This all too comon these days. Best wishes to a young mother who fell asleep… and the nightmare began.

I concur she was extremely stupid for lying down with a hairdryer on but why arrested immediately after losing her baby? A human being, is fallible and nothing is abnormal about that unless it is repeated again without asking for help… and she lost her child through accidental death and possibly her own illness, exhaustion, etc. Could they not wait to arrest after the funeral! What kind of society is this?
