The Bureau of Land Management’s Redding Field Office will conduct several prescribed burning projects this fall and winter to improve landscape health and remove brush piles remaining from vegetation improvement projects completed earlier.
Burns are planned to begin in late October and will continue through November on days when weather conditions allow for safe and successful burning and smoke dispersion.
A 75-acre broadcast prescribed fire is planned for the Swasey Recreation Area in west Redding. Smoke will be visible from the community.
Crews also plan to conduct a 350-acre broadcast prescribed fire in Little Grass Valley near Buckhorn Station on Highway 299, and a 125-acre broadcast prescribed fire seven miles northeast of French Gulch later this fall.
These burns are designed to remove brush, small trees and other vegetation to reduce wildfire risk and improve conditions for vegetation and wildlife.
Pile burning projects are planned for the Douglas City and Junction City campgrounds; Poker Bar, Snipe Gulch and Jennings Ridge, near Lewiston; the Weaverville Community Forest, a mile south of Weaverville; Hoadley Peak, north of Buckhorn Summit on Highway 299; Mule Mountain, southeast of Whiskeytown National Recreation Area; and trails along the Keswick Reservoir corridor in west Redding.
