Not Enough Music Saturday? Now There’s Acoustic Sundays

Vintage regular, San Diego musician Jacob Martin

Downtown Redding’s Vintage Wine Bar and Restaurant has steadily gained a reputation as the North State’s premiere Thursday-, Friday- and Saturday-night music venue. Since opening the doors, owners Janis Logan and Alex Gaxiola set out the welcome mat for the best-known local musicians and made Redding a stop-over-turned-must-stop for bands touring the west coast.

Now, they’ve upped the ante with “Acoustic Sundays,” an occasional, spontaneous, insiders’ euphonic experience. Rather than a carry-over from Friday or Saturday night’s wine, food and music bacchanalia, Janis and Alex designed Acoustic Sundays to be a relaxed, melodic ease into Monday. At Acoustic Sundays, everything is pared down, including the happy-hour appetizer menu and across-the-board discounts on drafts and flights.

This Sunday (March 27), Vintage welcomes Philadelphia’s “Hoots and Hellmouth,” headed north on their west coast tour.

Hoots & Hellmouth blend the twisted roots of American music in a fierce and fiery alchemy. Soulful three-part harmonies comingle with stringed things and foot stomps to build a synergy that bursts from both stage and speaker with aural aplomb. It’s city and country. It’s rock and soul. It’s bleeding, sweating, crying, rejoicing … It’s alive! Ask anyone who’s seen them perform, from Portland, ME, to Portland, OR, and they’ll tell you the same.

Janis and Alex, both live-music lovers, want Acoustic Sundays to be all about the music. Despite their hard-earned rep as the host for nationally-known bands, Janis admits that Fridays and Saturdays may not be the best nights at Vintage for music purists. Vintage is always a fun weekend spot, but even she admits that when the kitchen and wine bar are at full-steam, the music can get lost.

Have no fear. Acoustic Sundays is a chance for you to get lost in the music.

Visit Vintage this Sunday (March 27) for Hoots and Hellmouth. On April 3, Vintage hosts an evening of blues by Tony McGee, owner of Lagunitas Brewery, featuring Lagunitas on tap. On May 1, head in for the popular Los Angeles-based Northstar Session.
