Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus" inspired part of Respighi's "Three Botticelli Pictures," which will be performed at the February NSS concerts

Last season’s Young Artist Audition winners get starring roles in this concert. Molly Mahoney, first place winner in the College/University Division, is a mezzo-soprano who grew up in Chico. She will sing four sultry songs from Canteloube’s Chants D’Auvergne. According to conductor Kyle Wiley Pickett, “these are folk songs from a sun-baked region in southern France, an area like Tuscany. The composer marries the folk-songs with a gorgeous orchestral accompaniment.”

Redding’s Anthoni Polcari, who placed first in the High School competition to solo with the North State Symphony, will perform the first movement of Haydn’s charming C Major Cello Concerto.

Also on the concert: Haydn’s Symphony No. 88, Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks, and Respighi’s “Three Botticelli Pictures.”
