February is Black History Month, and a big event to mark the month is planned for this week at Shasta College.
The 6 p.m. Wednesday event will include a film, poetry readings, media presentations, music and speeches by students and community leaders. The keynote speaker is nationally syndicated columnist and educator Dr. Keith Orlando Hilton, who will talk about leadership in a diverse society.
It all takes place in Room 802 at Shasta College, and is sponsored by the college and the Shasta Coalition of African/Black Americans for Community Health, Education and Empowerment. More info here.
- A lecture by a Mount Shasta guide that was canceled last month has been rescheduled for next Wednesday at Turtle Bay Exploration Park. Chris Carr’s talk, Avalanches, Wolverines and Lemurians: A climbing Mt. Shasta primer, starts at 7 p.m. at the Turtle Bay visitors center theater. Admission is $3 for Turtle Bay members/$5 for non-members and $1 for children. Last month’s talk was canceled because a snowstorm prevented Carr from driving down to Redding.
- What was the secret weapon used by the thieves who pulled off the biggest diamond heist of all time? Hair spray. The thieves sprayed the lens of a motion detector to disable it. The 2003 heist in Antwerp is the subject of a new book. Full story here.
