February is National Go Red for Women Month, part of a movement to encourage women (and men, too) to embrace heart-healthy lifestyles. Mercy Medical Center in Redding marked the event on Friday by inflating a big red dress on top of its Outpatient Surgery Center.
The 20-foot-tall dress looks great. Hope those workmen wore their slickers.

- Thanks to some new federal funding, Shasta Senior Nutrition Programs is adding meal service twice a month in Happy Valley. The meals are available to all Happy Valley residents, aged 60 or above, regardless of income level. For reservations or more info, call 226-3060.
- CalTrans just got a new grant, too. Three million bucks to continue its Slow in the Cone Zone program, aimed at reducing accidents in highway construction areas. The money comes from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
- Men’s Health magazine surveyed the largest 100 cities in the United States, and declared that Fresno is the drunkest city. Boston, of all places, came in soberest. Redding wasn’t big enough to make the list, but I’m sure we would’ve scored high. I know I’m doing my part. Full list here.
- Speaking of booze, whiskey connoisseurs are all abuzz over three crates of Scotch and two crates of brandy recovered from Antarctica. The liquor was left behind by Ernest Shackleton’s failed expedition to the South Pole, and it’s been sitting in ice for 100 years. More here.
