Watermelon Agua Fresca

In the blistering heat of summer there are many ways to cool ourselves. A day at the lake, a drive up to the lava caves, a light summer meal. But nothing beats the heat like a giant ice cold beverage. One of my favorites is a fruity Agua Fresca. Strolling along at one of the wonderful Farmers Markets, (can you believe how many we can shop at now?) you will certainly find a variety of melons to choose from. Agua Frescas can be made with any ripe melon, honey dews and cantaloupe make an amazing drink.

Today I share with you my favorite, watermelon!

Enjoy plain, or add a little ginger juice to give it a little flavor boost. To make an adult beverage add a little vodka, gin, or tequila and enjoy!

Watermelon Agua Fresca

About 10 cups of cubed watermelon
3 cups water
1/4 cup fresh lime juice
1/4-1/2 cup sugar (the amount depends on your preference to sweetness)

Working in batches, place some watermelon and water in blender and puree, continue until all the watermelon and water are combined. Pour into a large pitcher and add lime juice and sugar, adding the sugar and tasting to reach the desired sweetness.

Chill for a few hours before serving. Serve over ice with a slice of lime.

Enjoy!

After falling in love with Redding’s downtown, Andrea and husband Westley opened a little pastry shop, Rene-Joule Patisserie, across from the Cascade Theatre. For the three years Rene-Joule was in business, it was renowned for making everything from scratch, using the best ingredients and keeping with a seasonal menu. To this day, Andrea is asked about her Marathon Bars, Orange Twists and sourdough bread.
