Removal of Fee Boxes at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area

During the last few months, the National Park Service has seen an increase in efforts to steal entrance fees from the fee boxes within Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. In an effort to better protect visitor fees, the pay-by-envelope boxes at Brandy Creek Beach, Brandy Creek Marina, Brandy Creek RV, Oak Bottom, and Whiskey Creek will be discontinued effective Monday, October 23, 2017.

A valid seven-day entrance pass is still required for all visitors, and can be purchased inside the visitor center from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, seven days a week. The visitor center is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Visitors arriving outside visitor center hours can still pay at the fee box located outside the visitor center. The Interagency Annual, Senior, Access, Fourth Grade, Military, Whiskeytown National Recreation Area and Lassen Volcanic National Park Annual Passes will still be honored throughout the park.

Prior to your visit to the park, you can purchase a seven-day or annual pass online at the website www.pay.gov. Whiskeytown National Recreation Area is also looking into technology-based solutions to allow visitors to pay via smart phones in the near future. Our hope is to grant our visitors easier access to purchasing entrance passes while at home or on the go.

Our goal is to protect visitor’s fee dollars and put these dollars to work improving the facilities at Whiskeytown. Your fee dollars go towards improvements to visitor amenities, such as trails, picnic areas, and access roads at Whiskeytown.

Previous projects funded by entrance fee revenue include replacing courtesy docks at Oak Bottom Marina, renovation of the Whiskey Creek Day Use Picnic Area, installing vault toilets and constructing an asphalt parking lot at Crystal Creek Falls trailhead. Additional revenue raised by a fee increase would help fund future projects such as regrading and resurfacing the upper one-mile section of Brandy Creek road, replacing the Oak Bottom Snack Bar, and replacing signs.
