What a pretty little bird . . . . but your artistic composition is outstanding!!
Ornithologists renamed this bird “Spotted Towhee” when they split the species—even though the two new species still interbreed where the ranges come together. I don’t like the new name, nor the new name in the East, which is “Eastern Towhee.” This is pure speculation, but I bet when they decided to split the species (bird taxonomists are notorious splitters) bird nerds on both sides of the country fought over “Rufous-Sided Towhee.” The compromise was that nobody got to keep the better name—both sides got boring new names. But c’mon….what’s more striking about the bird than those rufous sides?
The red eyes are pretty striking, too…to answer my own question.
What a beauty!
