Experience the lighter side of the small orchestra in this concert of jazzy and light-hearted pieces in our second chamber offering of the season. Maestro Pickett will conduct a “micro orchestra” in Bloch’s playful and entertaining Concerto Grosso for piano and strings. Then, Martinu’s La Revue de Cuisine will transport you to a jazz club in the City of Light itself. Finally, whet your appetite for Beethoven with his simple and elegant Septet, a mere taste of the genius to follow in our final concert.

Selections to be performed include a classical piece by Beethoven, his Septet, which he composed as a young man in a lighter mood. According to Pickett: “this is a really charming work, a serenade really. It’s a very different side of Beethoven from what we expect, and from what we’ll hear when the Symphony does his Ninth Symphony in May.”
The two other selections are also light in character, but very different from the Beethoven. The concert will open with a jazz-inspired work by a European composer, Martinu. Originally music for a ballet, the Revue de Cuisine has music instruments enacting a humorous love story between the inanimate objects in a kitchen.
The second half of the program is a work by Ernest Bloch entitled Concerto Grosso. Bloch wrote the piece to meet a challenge and show that, even in the 20th Century, good music could be created that followed the example as the past. The Concerto Grosso features a piano and string orchestra.
