Shasta College Brave Faces Portrait Gallery Event Aims to Change Minds about Mental Illness

SHASTA COUNTY – One in four people will deal with a mental illness in their lifetime, and an average of 40 Shasta County residents die by suicide every year. Stigma and shame associated with mental illness and suicide are the biggest barriers to seeking help.

The Brave Faces Portrait Gallery, which combines photography and oral histories to tell the true stories of local Shasta County residents who have found recovery and healing after struggling with mental health problems. The purpose of the gallery is to fight stigma associated with mental illness, substance abuse and suicide.

The gallery will be on display at the Shasta College Library through the month of September, and a free gallery opening event will be held 5:30-7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 13, in the library where Brave Faces participants will share their story through multimedia presentations. A reception with light refreshments will follow.

Please don’t miss this an opportunity to be inspired and to learn more about mental health, a subject that is far too often relegated to the shadows.

The Brave Faces Portrait Gallery is a collaborative project of Shasta County Health and Human Services and the Community Education Committee, and is funded by the Mental Health Services Act.
