As the seasons change, we move indoors from the field to the hardwood. The 42nd Annual Boys’ Harlan Carter Invitational Basketball Tournament is set to take place from December 1-3 at Shasta High School, while the 38th Annual Girls’ Harlan Carter Invitational Basketball Tournament is set to take place from December 8-10 at Enterprise High School. This tournament, rich in tradition, will mark the tip off of the high school basketball season.
Local cagers will be suiting up to try to take the crown back from Pleasant Valley, who took both the varsity girls’ and boys’ tournament last year. First round boys varsity games feature – Pleasant Valley vs. Placer at 4:00 PM, Foothill vs. Ashland at 5:30 PM, Shasta vs. Eureka at 7:00 PM and Enterprise vs. Soquel at 8:30 PM. First round girls varsity games feature – Pleasant Valley vs. Eureka at 4:00 PM, Foothill vs. Placer at 5:30 PM, Enterprise vs. West Valley at 7:00 PM and Shasta vs. Anderson at 8:30 PM.
“The annual Harlan Carter Tournament officially kicks off the winter sports season with a bang! “ says Kyle Turner, Associate Superintendent from the Shasta Union High School District. “Each year, our participating schools display the competitive spirit and character that embodies the best of high school sports in the North State and beyond. A huge thank you goes out to the Harlan Carter Tournament committee who works many hours behind the scenes to make this tournament the success that it is.”
Aside from the exciting basketball action, local Rotaries sponsor a tournament luncheon for all players and coaches. Each year the tournament committee invites successful Harlan Carter alums to address the student-athletes. This year’s luncheons will feature Billy Speer, a successful business banking officer at North Valley Bank and an Enterprise graduate, and Lydia Reiner, owner of Reiner Chiropractic and graduate of Shasta High School.
“The community support that we receive each year for this tournament is incredible,” says Tournament Director, Kerri Forrister. “Our committee works very hard to obtain sponsors and create a first class local tournament for our student-athletes.” Title sponsors for the 2011 tournament include KRCR News Channel 7, Results Radio, the Record Searchlight and the Shasta Union High School District.
Tickets can be purchased at the door: $5 for adults ($12, 3-Day Pass is available), $3 for students with ASB cards, seniors (65+), and children ages 7-14, and children age 6 and under are free. All proceeds from the tournament benefit Athletics Booster Clubs of the Shasta Union High School District.
