DATE/TIME: 07-02-11 1125 hours

CRIME/INCIDENT: Houseboat fire

LOCATION: Holiday Harbor Resort, Shasta Lake

VICTIMS: Richard Fry, 87, of San Francisco and Michael Laing, 44, of Redding, CA

SYNOPSIS: On Saturday, 07-02-11, at 1125 hours (11:25 a.m.), deputies were dispatched to a houseboat fire at Holiday Harbor Resort. When deputies arrived on scene, the rear area of a houseboat was fully involved with fire. There were numerous Holiday Harbor Resort employees on the houseboat fighting the fire with fire extinguishers. CAL Fire arrived on scene with three fire boats and contained and extinguished the fire. No other boats were damaged.

Deputy Fred Fortes interviewed the houseboat owner, Richard Fry. Fry said he was using a 12-volt pump to siphon water out of the gas tank of the houseboat and into a 5-gallon plastic bucket. An unknown ignition source ignited the vapors, causing the fire. Fry suffered first- and second-degree burns to both hands and forearms. Holiday Harbor Resort employee Michael Laing was burned on one hand and one knee while attempting to extinguish the fire.

Both Fry and Laing went to local hospitals for treatment. Fry went by ambulance and Laing went by a private vehicle. CAL Fire is in investigating the incident.
