Pros & Joes BBQ Contest Winners Were Smokin’

Downtown Redding was smokin' Saturday with the aroma of barbecued chicken, ribs, tri tip and even poppers as 31 grillers and smokers competed during the first Pros 'n' Joes BBQ Grilldown. You read Adam Mankoski's preview article, which described this first-year event. Judging by the turn-out, I'd expect to see this event return next year.

Hundreds of people paid $10 each for the chance to sample some of the north state's best grilled foods.

A few dozen judges - including yours truly - judged the event, which, as I'm fond of saying, is a lot harder than it sounds.

Yes, the food was delicious (with the exception of an inedible cayenned item), but as with any food judging effort, it was a tough call. We judges had no clue whose food we were judging, which is the most fair way to do it. We judged on appearance, taste and tenderness.

While we judges spent the afternoon tasting meat grilled by both regular "Joes" and "Pros"  - the crowds listened to wonderful music, sampled food, drank beer and soda and bought grilling supplies and rubs.

The weather was warm and beautiful, and the streets were packed with people who seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Eventually, though, the scores were tallied and the awards presented. Some winners received money, others received trophies, and yet others received a ribbon.

  1. We had a great time and everything we tasted was delicious. I especially LOVED the pulled pork sliders by Dill's Deli. Yum!!!

  2. A full day at the lake.

We came home and just didn't want to cook.

We heated up a few cans of Trader Joes organic baked beans. We took all the extra tri tip from our judging and cut it into cubes and mixed it with the beans.

It was one of the best meals I've ever had. Every bite was a new tri tip taste.

I have a hunch there will be a line a mile long for judges next year!

  3. This was an amazing event. Food was grubbin', people were nice, beer was cold, and best of all we had a blast. DO NOT miss this event next year.

  4. I know this is slightly off topic but Doni you look cute as a bug in the BBQ Judging photo. At a glance Liza Mannelli ! (but better!) :-)

  5. I look forward to next years competition except the next time I will be smokin' if all goes right.

My compliments to everyone that was out there grillin and smokin you all out did yourselves.

Oh and to the guys from the Anderson Rotary "Great Beans Guys"

I would like to see a side dish catagory next time for those of us that like to go all out with all the fixins....

  6. That was a great turnout. Thanks for doing a great job with the judging! I loved James's HAT!!!
