Sarah Palin Wows Redding Audience

palin-closeup

Sarah Palin received a rock star’s welcome at the Sierra Cascade Logging Conference where she spoke before the first of two sold-out shows at the Redding Convention Center on Monday afternoon.

That’s 4,000 people who paid between $54 for a balcony seat to $74 for a floor seat. I had a floor seat - second row, so near the tower of speakers that I followed the example of people around me and wadded tissue in my right ear to reduce the volume.

Even so, I heard every word and felt the crowd’s jostling adoration as they cheered and applauded throughout Palin’s speech.

The audience, still euphoric from the Official California Cowboys’ final song, “I’m Proud to Be an American” (where many sang along and shouted “Stand UP!” in unison at the song’s pivotal moment), was already on its feet when Palin was introduced.

The crowd applauded as Palin strode on stage waving and smiling as she took her place behind a lectern before a mammoth American flag in a stars-and-stripes-draped auditorium.

She began by acknowledging veterans’ sacrifices, and asked everyone who’d ever served in the military to stand for a heroes’ recognition.

After that, she read from a prepared speech, heavily peppered with Palin lingo that delighted the audience.

Loud laughter followed Palin’s references to “lame-stream media” and jeers accompanied every reference to global warming. Enthusiastic boos followed a reference to Nancy Pelosi.

She endeared herself to the logging conference crowd by holding her hand up to show what was written on her palm: “Loggers rock!” - an apparent dig at “lame-stream media” who recently ridiculed her for writing memory prompts on her hand. And toward the end of her talk she complimented logging industry folks when she referred to an administration that talks about green jobs.

“You guys were doing green jobs before green jobs were even cool!”

And although Palin tailored some of her speech especially for the logging industry, her message also had the ring of someone running for office as she recounted a lifetime of accomplishments, from city council and mayor to governor and vice presidential candidate.

She made frequent jabs at ”the feds” and Washington and “the people in charge” and took them to task for everything from “obstructionist tactics” that threaten industry to doing a “whole lot of talk without a whole lot of action.”

Wild applause followed many of her points, including:

- “Washington needs to stop lecturing and start listening.”

- “We need basic common-sense government with fiscal restraint and limited control.”

- “We need to stand up and tell government to back off.”

- “Sometimes I wonder if anyone in Washington has ever run a business.”

- “Washington wants us to think this is all over our head. Obviously, they want us to sit down and shut up.”

- “Washington needs to walk the walk.”

- “We need an all-of-the-above approach to drilling, digging and mining, and support for nuclear energy.”

- “A lot of green is wishful thinking … in the meantime we have to drill here now and tap into our plentiful supplies.”

- “I named my daughter Willow. Isn’t that granola enough for ya?” (Regarding forest preservation.)

palin-crowd-image

The audience - a group who’d waited patiently outside in long lines as security shone flashlights inside purses - roared its approval, and kept it up throughout Palin’s nearly hour-long speech.

She concluded her talk by sitting down with Nadine Bailey, executive director of the conference, who asked questions posed by some members about topics like clear-cutting on private property “California is tough … maybe California is behind the times,” and the drive for national health care, “… we need a robust economy so people can afford health care.”

A standing ovation greeted Palin’s goodbye amid some shouts of “We love you, Sarah!” and ”Run, Sarah, run,” to which she replied, “Well, bless your heart.”

Some fans rushed the stage waving copies of Palin’s newly released book, “Going Rogue,” a few of which Palin stooped from the stage to sign as her daughter Piper watched on.

And then Palin was gone, off to prepare for the next showing at 7 p.m.

palin-protesters

Meanwhile, outside the Convention Center, a few picketers held signs, while some yelled out things like, “Go back to Alaska!”

Later, KLXR owner Mike Quinn, the Sierra Cascade Logging Conference board member who’d handled ticket sales, said he couldn’t have been more pleased at the turn-out. He said Palin admirers came from as far away as Nevada and Oregon, Gilroy and Sacramento and beyond.

“It was great to see how far people would travel, and how fast word spread about the tickets,” he said. “People said they’d see her up close and personal in the Convention Center since it only seats 2,000. She usually speaks in much larger auditoriums. We sold almost all the tickets within a day or so.”

Pretty impressive, especially considering the recession, not to mention, as one of the singing cowboys said earlier, “I wonder how so many people got off work on a Monday afternoon?”

So many questions.

As I walked through the parking lot, a picketer shouted out a back-handed compliment.

“Hey, you’re pretty enough! Maybe you should run for president.”

Imagine that.

Sarah Palin is the poster child for celebrity politicians. You know, the ones who people want to see because they are famous for being famous. If anyone does even the most basic research on her background, her term as Mayor, her half-term as Governor, and her collusion with her husband to create a shadow government in Alaska through Todd, then you would not be paying money to see her. You’d be paying money to keep her out of your community.

I ask for all citizens to do their due diligence. I used to be a Republican and am an Independent now. I cannot see how any thinking person wants to divide the country into left and right - this is America and we should think hard and long about how to help our country.

We should spend more time and effort researching and recruiting the highest caliber of people for public service, not accept pretty faces and platitudes as our leaders because the power brokers have decided they will be useful to attract non-thinking people who are content with their shallow emotional patriotism.

True patriots care enough to do the research, to ask the tough questions, to not accept at face value whatever someone, be it pundit or politician, - throws at them as raw meat.

Sarah is not “awesome.” She is faux “ah-shucks.” She is a grifter, pure and simple with emphasis on the simple.

Yes, I agree. We as citizens tend to get so caught up in personality cults, the focus of which, USUALLY, have nothing to recommend them except the packaging. Yes, Sarah has looks, yes, she has personality, yes, she has energy but I do NOT trust her judgement in decision making. She has made some really poor decisions both in her personal life and in her governing.

I also SOOOO wish we could get away from demonizing either the right or the left. both sides are guilty there. “If you are not of my party then you are stupid!!” No, if I am not of your party I have a difference of opinion. Last time I checked that was part of what makes America great.

Reason people love Sarah Palin is she has common sense, godly wisdom and is a Conservative. These qualities are not obtainable in a University regardless of it’s status.
I noticed the people holding the signs, they remind me of the Pot heads from the 60’s that moved to California to live in a commune. They also remind me of Bill Ayers, there is a resemblance if you look close enough.
These people spew their hate, yet they won’t research the facts, for instance the guy with the “quitter” sign. Sarah Palin handed over her title as Gov. to SAVE Alaska millions of dollars in frivolous lawsuits. Obama should resign and SAVE AMERICANS TRILLIONS of dollars in added debt, but being the narcissist that he is he needs a title next to his name. I can think of many titles for him and “POTUS” is not one that fits the bill. Obama should do what is best for America and step down and save face. When he speaks without a teleprompter he is as lost a child in a crowded mall, he is unable to make a sentence without scratching his head and adding an um, uh, “I can’t hear myself”. WHAT! HE CAN’T HEAR HIMSELF? is someone whispering something in his ear, will maybe the Wi-Fi in that building was not working. :D These people really sound like “educated” fools when they make-up signs and spew hate the way they do. Belittling someone only makes you look foolish. Time for these people to grow-up and check the facts before the stamp on their forehead read “educated fool”.

You haven’t done your homework, 5:49 a.m. poster. Sarah only said she resigned to save Alaska money. Her administration cost Alaskans money. Those ethics allegations were not frivolous, and she did not escape unscathed after investigation.

You might want to read the emails released under the Freedom of Information Act to MSNBA last week. They are in a searchable online database. Look for yourself if you are not afraid to see how incompetent this woman truly is, and how unethically she and her husband have behaved.

Have you not read about the unpaid tax scandal that broke last week? That is quite enlightening.

Did you know that the Palin family get free, government-sponsored healthcare because of Todd’s Native American lineage? She tells everyone else they shouldn’t want it, should get it, but she herself takes advantage of it. How bad can government-sponsored health care be if she herself embraces it?

Perhaps you’d like to check out the long history of vengeful, petty retaliation she has against those who have helped her but outlived their usefulness. You don’t have to believe me - go research it yourself. It isn’t difficult. It is disturbing. She will throw anyone under the bus if she thinks she no longer needs them or have affronted in some way.

Read about her treatment of working-class people who have served her. You can find incidents where the stylists, restaurant works and others will state their names and talk about her sense of entitlement, her disdain for their hard work and need for compensation. She has stiffed too many people for too long for there not to be a track record. Please investigate and see if you still feel in awe of this grifter.

I have no doubt that you will change your opinion of her the more you find out about her, but it will take some willingness to learn, some time and effort (not that much, really, the information is there waiting for you to find it).

Look up her ties to Dominionism as well. Unless you, too, want only one religion ruling everyone, you might begin to feel uneasy about her agenda. Learn about the Seven Mountains doctrine. Look into the anti-witch anointing (no, I am not making this up) video taken in her own church, done by an African “pastor” who is known of his movement to kill “alleged” witches in his own country.

That’s the Sarah you need to learn about. Not the perky, short-skirted, winking, smiling person who will not take Q&A sessions with main stream media,

As to your attacks on President Obama, why not acknowledge he is trying to correct eight years of misbehavior by Bush-Cheney and their hands-off approach to regulating key industries. President Obama has not created trillions of dollars of debt. Look it up or are you afraid to find the truth? Goodness, if you are using the internet, you have the tools you need already.

Do you not remember that under the Bush administration, they literally send pallets of money - millions of dollars - in cash to Iraq to be handed out without any record of who received it and why? People came up to the soldiers dispensing it with backpacks into which to stuff that money. That too is out there waiting for you to learn about.

Of course, you will need to go to objective sites to get information. The facts about Palin and Bush-Cheney are not hidden, nor are they promulgated by only progressives. President Obama was voted in by a coalition of progressives, moderate Republicans and Independents because people began to read and understand they had been lied to and manipulated.

Sarah is part and parcel of that legacy. The same folks who were behind Bush-Cheney seem to be backing her, grooming her and trying to foist her on us as they did George W. Bush. Remember, I said I had been a Republican and am now an Independent - this is not a leftish challenging you. I am just willing to research and learn, ask questions and not settle for easy, canned answers.

Why not stop making fun of President Obama and really compare the quality of information you are getting from him and from Sarah? It is the difference between substance (President Obama) and Sarah (style/celebrity/empty words). Classic contrast. President Obama can hold his own without a teleprompter or a do-it-yourself “palm” pilot. Just go and bring up the videos on the Q&A session with the Congressional Republicans from last week. That says it all.

You have not done your homework, 5:49 a.m. You certainly have no standing to call other people fools and ask them to check facts.

Methinks you protest too much: perhaps you are looking in a mirror when you call the people holding signs fools who spew hate. It is you who seems to be belittling others, you who has not done fact-checking, you who is caught up in hate and mindless chatter. Why not use your enthusiasm constructively? Why not read more widely, consider what the other side is saying, ask questions rather than throw insults?

I was not originally sold on Obama as a candidate. Oh, he had spoken well at the Democratic Convention years earlier, but I knew so little about him. However, the more research I did, the more I considered his proposals and checked into their viability, then the more supportive I became. I changed my mind because he is the real deal. He has the competence, the intelligence, the adult interpersonal skills needed for a Chief Executive.

Do I agree with everything he says or does. I do not. However, I respect him because he does his homework, he reflects before he speaks, and he does not often rely upon empty, emotional phrases to generate support. He doesn’t “lecture” in the way you seem to dislike. He teaches. Oh, yeah, that would mean you’d have to like to learn and grow to like his approach. Sorry, I forgot, you don’t seem to like to research .

It’s okay if you disagree with those who do not support Sarah Palin, but why not have solid reasons grounded in research and deliver those arguments in a civil way so as to try and convince others rather than make demeaning comments?

In sum, I guess I have to say you did say one thing better than anyone else: “Belittling someone only makes you look foolish.” Great self-analysis.

Sorry, now I am sounding like you. It was just too easy.

I sooooooo agree with sunflower….this woman cannot be trusted!! As a woman it is understood that in this Era, women in politics are mentors and leaders, and lead by example. I agree it is an important factor, for each of us to visualize and believe in the dream that a Woman can be our President.

However; there are many women with attributes, skills and talents that could be an actual Icon for women everywhere. Can one say that Palin is that picture we are looking for? Is this woman the diplomat that we need during the most difficult of times. Does Palin reflect and represent a “steadfast, consistent character?”

Come on people are we that desperate, and afraid to admit we might be looking at her through our “rose-colored” glasses, and our hearing aides might not be working properly? The woman needs to “Walk her Talk”…Seeing is believing. When Palin can live by example for the American People, “all” of “us”… possibly I could be more open-minded to her potential as a leader for the United States of America. So far, all I have seen from this woman is…she takes “one slice of the American Pie, her favorite, and runs with it.”

Meanwhile, I shall “await” for that politician, that ONE woman who is ready, willing and able to “walk-her-talk” and serve “WE the People” and with Pride chooses to devote her time and life for the “Whole American Pie” ~~

I think she should stay in politics and keep up with her family and the soccer games, but surely…not run for the President of the United States!!!

Those of us who voted for President Obama do not have to agree with him across-the-board on every issue. That’s the beauty of being a grown-up. You can disagree with some things, and support others. You do not have to be blind to inconsistencies or disappointments. You can weigh everything to see what the overall impact is. In that regard, President Obama is proving himself to be more than competent; he is an adult trying to cope with vicious adolescent misbehavior and irresponsibility as exemplified by the Say No Party.

The Democratic majority is only an illusion because there are ultra-conservative Democrats who really follow a Republican playbook. That’s just how it is. Better to have a party where people can follow their own conscience than be forced to conform to whatever special interests control the Republican Party.

Change has come slowly but it has come fast enough to scare people who are uncomfortable with any change. At least President Obama is advocating change out in the open, not like Bush-Cheney where Cheney conducted his own shadow war government and Bush used Signing Statements and Executive Orders to defy and deny the law.

Dividing? You mean like our president who said, quote: “Get in their faces. Argue with them.” Like THAT was’nt dividing our country?

Face it: Suggesting that Palin is polarizing is a misogynist tactic that WON’T WORK anymore, pal. Liberal sexism is so not cool anymore. Guess what? Not every feminist is liberal. There are conservative “feminists.” Deal with it.

Every politician is good at “dividing our country” including Obama, Bush, Clinton, Reagan, Carter, Nixon, Johnson and Kennedy.

You just don’t like seeing a woman with real power as Sarah obviously has.

Get used to it. Get over it. And stop being a sexist.

Sarah is not being attacked because she is a woman. She is being criticized because she has nothing to offer. She is an empty shell driven by greed and self-aggrandizement. Sarah doesn’t have real power; she has celebrity. Without her looks, no one would listen. We women would be better served with someone with intelligence and depth. Sarah has the potential to undermine the progress serious female politicians have made once the public becomes tired of her. The next time an attractive (but worthy) package comes forth, most of us may write her off as “just another Sarah” before we give her time to prove herself.

For all her superficial “beauty,” Sarah Palin speaks to ugliest parts of our electorate: fear, hate, resentment, ignorance, racism. There is nothing pretty about her messages.

Too bad about Palin Derangement syndrome. I hear it can be treated with psychotropics.

Palin wouldn’t be burying the nation in debt by spending money the country doesn’t have and passing the financial responsibility on our children and grandchildren.

Ever notice Palin seldom mentions herself as opposed to “The Won,” who refers to himself at least once every two minutes.

Obama had a filabuster-proof senate, majorities in both houses and a adoring media that resembles propagandists rather than journalists and he can’t get anything done.

Do you think it was easy to take on her party establishment in Alaska, and blow the whistle on self-dealing between high-ranking officials in her own party and the oil industry ???

That is EXACTLY what we need in DC! Someone with a backbone. Name me one other politician who will actually go after corruption? Obama seriously talks a good game, but where are the consequences? He blasts the banks, but 92% of the officials at the TARP-funded banks still have their jobs. And the Democratic party takes MILLIONS in campaign contributions from Wall STreet and Big Oil.

It’s all a word game for these people. They’re fleecing the tax payers and pretending to be TOUGH on special interests.

Sarah is not beholden to ANY special interests except WE THE PEOPLE. You may not agree with her on every issue, but wouldn’t it be nice to have someone in a position of power who didn’t gain power by greasing the system?

The “corruption” that the Woman who was supposed to live in Juneau takes so much credit for going after was about as penny ante as you could imagine. She talks about the “bigwigs” that went to jail. Well, that would be a few Republican legislators and the aged president of what we like to call an “oil field services company.” In her last elected office she had no role, nor did Alaska’s Attorney General in any of the Federal investigations and prosecutions. The State of Alaska during the period she held office had no “corruption” cases going on that she can in any sense claim credit for.
When she was a Commssioner on the Oil a d Gas Conservation Commission (our version of the Texas Railroad Commission, in a sense) she discovered (suprise, suprise) that the Chair of the 3 member panel, Mr. Randy Ruderich who concurrently was (and still is) Chairman of the Alaska Republican Party was using State resources to “do a little politickin’. ” Righteously indignant, the WWWSTLIJ took him to task and resigned from one of our State’s most plum political appointments (she got it for running for Lt. Governor and losing, btw) and started boosting her own political fortunes.
I want to repeat- the “corruption” she talks about so much was some Republican legislators selling themselves for trifling sums to oil companies who in the end suffered naught. Bill Allen, former head of former VECO plead and squaled and played a big role in our losing (Republican) Senator Stevens to a federal indictment that was ultimately vacated by President Obama’s Attorney General Eric Holder. The WWWSTLIJ is by no means a “corruption fighter” and her record - not her words - her record shows this to be true.

It shouldn’t surprise me any longer how petrified with fear the left is of Super Sarah. They try to destroy and impugn her, yet she gets stronger. Those who recognize the LSM for the tool of the left, love to see someone fearless enough to take them on and win, and not kowtow.
For those lefties that just can’t understand what her appeal is, it is quite simple.
    She is genuine!
    She is one of us!
She has done many of the things we have done, worked our way through college, started a business and raised a family. In the past election, of the four who were competing for President and Vice Prez, she was the only one who had any actual executive experience, yet is referred to as “unqualified.”
Whatever her role in politics will be henceforth, I don’t care, as long as she is out there speaking her mind. If the left is so terrified of what she says, or who she is, then I suggest they confront their own fears and embrace the America she is talking about. Reagan didn’t move to the left, the left moved towards him, and America was the winner.
This is the exact same path she is taking, and real America loves her for it.

A dose of reality. Sarah Palin does indeed have a large devoted group of followers. When translated into votes in an election, however, it will be about 25% of the population. That means she will get hammered in 2012 if indeed she becomes the nominee. I hope she is the Republican candidate for President. I relish the prospect of a debate between her and Obama.

I can understand the appeal of a charismatic speaker, but I fail to understand why the appeal continues long after the final chant of “Sarah…Sarah” fades away and reality returns. If Palin runs, it will be interesting to hear what her platform will address and if it will include specific plans or simply sound bite rhetoric.

It is great for people to be passionate about their country, about their leaders, about their beliefs…but it so dilutes the message when that passion is translated into angry rather than thoughtful dialog. We are, after all, in this together…and neither party looks too bright and shiny right now.

The rise of Sarah Palin is an interesting political phenomena. Her simple, and well crafted populist message resonates with a big chunk of American voters, yet not many really consider her as a future President. Her niche may simply be that of a cheerleader for conservative values, and as a lightening rod for the far left, which helps keep the debate between left and right alive, and focused.

What amuses me is how pissy the leftists (progressives) get whenever her name is mentioned. They just go into an apoplectic rage, and emotionally wander around with their knickers in a bunch. Why is that? If she is the “big nothing” they claim her to be, then why the angry response to her? Fear is the underlying basis for anger. So, my question to you is: Do you fear her? If so, maybe she isn’t the “big nothing” you want her to be.

    Reply

    stardust Reply:

The “fear” is that it is conceivable that she could receive the Republican nomination. That should explain it.

However, as pointed out earlier, perhaps that wouldn’t be so bad after all, as it’s highly unlikely that she would win the Presidency. Many Republican and independent voters will not support her. But just the fact that some take her seriously as a viable candidate is a very frightening thought. Differing viewpoints aside, many feel that she does not have the intelligence that should be a requirement for President.

    Reply

    phil barker Reply:

    stardust,
I understand the fear that somehow she could somehow rise to the level of becoming the Republican nominee, and then the Presidency would be a possibility. In politics stranger things have happened, a la Barack Obama, who is even less qualified than Sarah Palin to hold the position. And, the early reports of his genius have proven highly exaggerated.

No, the reaction to Palin is much more visceral. She incites a type of hysteria in leftists (of course, that doesn’t take much) that is indicative of a deep seated hatred for her as a person; hence, the personal nature of the attacks.
