Bruce’s GO Picks

Doni asked me to make a couple of Grocery Outlet food picks. Though Doni does most of the cooking in our house, she asked me to select a few picks with a man’s perspective. This is probably the one time you’ll find my writing in the food section so I decided to have a little fun with this project.

I view shopping in two categories. First is what I call the bachelor category. This consists of the three basic food groups: sandwiches, snacks and Ice cream.

The second category is what I refer to as the dating menu. This is where I buy food that is interesting, within my ability to prepare, and it looks good enough to qualify as a romantic evening once the table is set.

For the GO pick I went with the dating menu.

Here’s what I found.

Fresh Fettuccine: $1.59 (elsewhere $3.99)

Parmesan cheese: 1.99  (elsewhere $4.99)

A bag of Romaine lettuce: $1.99

Two hot house tomatoes: 88 cents (elsewhere $1.29)

One zucchini: 25 cents  (elsewhere 99 cents)

One onion: 25 cents (elsewhere 99 cents)

One avocado: 89 cents (elsewhere $1.49)

One basket of Strawberries: $1.99 ( elsewhere 3.99)

A bottle of Wine: $4.99 (elsewhere $14.99)

Sharffenberger chocolate: $1.99 (elsewhere $3.99)

Total cost: $16.81

According to Grocery Outlet’s list I would have paid $38.70 somewhere else. For a savings of $21.89. By the way, we had enough left-overs for dinner the next night. That works out to be an entree of fettuccine, a vegetable side, a salad, dessert and wine for $4.20 a plate.

Below are photos of what I bought and a 3-minute video of me preparing a surprise dinner for Doni.

I’m jealous — my husband only buys me the $3.99 bottles of wine.

    Good job, Bruce!

Well dang Bruce, I for one hope this isn’t your one and only installment on the GO Picks. Well done.

You seem comfortable in front of the camera. Yet another talent of yours comes to the fore. Y’know, I’d find you really likable if you didn’t make me feel so inadequate. :)

Wonderful “picks”, Bruce. My husband could use some pointers; he usually comes home with stuff that doesn’t “go with anything”

To those of you who have left such kind comments, thank you.
In the spirit of full disclosure I must confess in my first attempt at melting the chocolate I burned it and had to make a run to the Igo store for chocolate chips . Otherwise, it all went pretty smoothly.
To the husbands who are preparing the tar and feathers, it wasn’t really me. It was my identical twin who lives in his van and was last seen heading east on I-80 somewhere in Nevada :-)

Great job, Bruce! Did any other viewers find themselves puckering up as Doni swoops in with that kiss at the end?

Bruce, This was so fun to watch. You did a terrific job on the dinner, and I love how you caught Doni coming in the door to such a beautiful feast. I’m with the others, and hope this won’t be your one and only video cooking show!
