What a Gift From Shasta College

Today I learned how to create a podcast, how sound waves travel through various shapes to make musical notes, the physics of brass instruments, how animation studios work, innovations in large-scale instruction to level the playing field for animation students, how to edit a digital audio recording, what it’s like behind the scenes of “Guitar Hero,” “Rock Band,” “Dance Dance Revolution,” “Samba de Amigo,” “Tap Tap Revenge” and other cool games, and what sound design studios do. (How much do I love this job?)

Wow. Just wow.

The New Media Toolkit: Playing With Ideas” was a daylong conference on creativity through music, animation, filmmaking and podcasting.

It was offered free for anybody. FREE. Courtesy of Shasta College.

Talk about inspiring. And skill-building. (I’ll add a few more highlights here later.)

About 300 people signed up for the day. I’m certain attendance would have been even higher if spring break weren’t beginning. Many students - about 35 - volunteered to work the event. Anderson New Tech High School students attended.  I was wondering where all the other high school classes were.  Art, drama, music, computer-technology teachers? No field trips?

The conference was funded through Shasta College Foundation, the Economic and Workforce Development through California Community Colleges, and the Multimedia and Entertainment Initiative.

Nicely done, Shasta College. Thank you.

I went to see the fellow from Paradise talk about his adventures in recording and producing the Guitar Hero stuff, and ended up regretting having missed the prior “salon”-type presentations. Very interesting ideas on what is happening with new technology and media and such. Hopefully this will be an on-going affair.
