March is National Nutrition Month, and it’s a good time for all of us to examine our diets.
In Shasta County, 66 percent of adults fall into the categories of obese or overweight; for kids, it’s 37 percent.
Some dietary problems appear to stem from where you live. The county Public Health department recently completed a study of several neighborhoods in Redding and Anderson, and found that access to healthy food was more difficult in low-income neighborhoods. Fast food and convenience stores were more accessible than supermarkets or stores dealing in fresh produce. Studies nationwide have found that such neighborhoods have higher levels of obesity, diabetes and other chronic diseases.
Public Health plans community forums over the next couple of months where residents can discuss ways to make such neighborhoods healthier.
Meanwhile, the Shasta Coalition for Activity and Nutrition and Healthy Shasta have scheduled free Monday events for the rest of the month to help area residents learn more about eating healthy. Here’s the schedule:
