Whiskeytown Regatta Fun Day

If you sail, you’re probably already registered for the Whiskeytown Lake Regatta Fun Day this weekend, but if you just enjoy watching boat races and being near the water, this weekend is for you, too.
Saturday’s fun begins about noon at Brandy Creek. Watchers, bring your picnics, binoculars, cameras, jackets and umbrellas. Predictions are for 30 percent chance of rain. Check here for the very latest.
Oh, but never mind a little weather. Just look at that sparkling water: Whiskeytown Lake webcam. (Can’t see anything? Dude. You have to wait ’til daylight.)
This weekend is the first of four fun regattas, the last one being on Memorial Day weekend. They are: #1 Feb. 28 / #2 March 28 / #3 April 25 / #4 May 30.
If you want to participate in another one later (or if you’re just want an inside peek at how it goes), here’s the drill:
Sign up here a week ahead so enough boats can be scheduled. Print name and address, and sign waiver.
…

Doni…
As I may have mentioned, my lovely wife, Brenda, works in the Fire Weather business for the USFS and wrote this forecast for the upcoming week. Just a reminder that it is always wise to keep out the “weather eye” this time of year. If you go, stay safe!
Pasted from the Northern California Geographic Coordination Center:
Weather Synopsis:
The weather pattern will remain quite unsettled through next week. Several low pressure systems are currently in the neighborhood, one moving through the Pacific Northwest, one well off shore and another one poised over Alaska. All of these systems will be affecting North Ops into next week. The southern edge of the Pacific Northwest weather system will be diminishing over our region today in preparation for a break between events Friday. The Alaskan low will be moving south over the next few days and combine forces with the offshore low and move inland this weekend for what is expected to be a cool, windy, wet event into Tuesday. Wind speeds will be increasing to substantial numbers (10-25 mph sustained with gusts 35-60 mph) over the Geographic Area Saturday and continue to be strong into Sunday before gradually decreasing. Quite a bit of moisture is expected to arrive this weekend and snow levels will be lowering, but it isn’t until about late Monday into Tuesday that they will drop to their lowest, around 2500 ft in the north and 3500 ft in the south (but locally lower in all areas). Another system appears likely to arrive the middle of next week without much break in between to keep this moist streak going. B.Belongie

Doni,
Great write up, thank you. The best sailing is done in when the weather is not perfect. Rain or Shine. According to my friend Mike Strahle with the Redding Yacht Club, “If it rains, it just makes it more of an adventure.” I can’t agree more.
Are you going to come out and join us?
Thanks again!
