Former Haven CEO to Stand Trial
Former Haven Humane Society CEO Norm Ryan “will be held to account” at trial beginning next month, Shasta County Superior Court Judge James Ruggiero ruled after his preliminary hearing today.
Despite Defense Attorney John Kucera’s attempts to show that investigators had a weak case, Ruggiero said he had a “strong suspicion” that the case should move forward.
He set the next date for Feb. 6 at 8:30 a.m. for arraignment.
Ryan is accused of swindling about $1,500 from the organization through false documents and travel reimbursements for work-related trips not taken. His attorney argues that suspicion against Ryan is based on miscommunication and misunderstandings, and that police evidence was colored by disagreements Ryan had with the police chief at the time, who served with him on a city committee.

Of course his biggest crime is not being one of the local good old boys. Haven has had its problems for years, long before Ryan made the mistake of leaving SoCal for Redding. If a cop doesn’t get charged for recklessly allowing his gun to kill his kid, then anything less should not be charged either.

GamerJohn, if you hadn’t written a comment I wouldn’t have even known this article had been posted. I’ve been to a lot of Preliminarys and I know that a lot more was said than Kelley has written about. Even the Backward Flashlight had more detail. I find the Portland revelation an interesting twist, but not enough background to puzzle anything out.
Kelly, any chance of getting more details; Who testified? What did they testify to? Come on, you are better than this. -Matt

I hope you continue to cover this story in detail. It sure sounds like an innocent man got into trouble because some body had it in for him.
There does not seem to be any intent to defruad.
