New friend in the house: ‘In a North State Garden’
Doni & Kelly note: We’re excited to announce our new alliance with the one and only Jennifer Jewell of Chico, who inspires and delights us with her regular feature, In a North State Garden. Jennifer’s gardening profiles, careful explanations and beautiful photography will appear in our Great Outdoors section. (Those of you with sharp eyes might have spotted Jennifer as one of the incognito celebrities at our Nov. 1 birthday party. Oh, yes, she was there.) If you know Jennifer’s work as a national garden writer, you’re doing the happy dance right now. If you don’t yet know about her, you’re in for a treat. Please join us in welcoming our new friend to Food for Thought: A News Cafe.

Welcome, Jennifer! Your love of the dahlia is infectuous. I have several in my yard above Lake Shasta, but only have great blooms at the end of summer when the heat calms down. They stay around until nights get cold. My favorite (this year) is the new low-growing black-leaf variety. The bright flowers contrast beautifully with the black-green leaves.
