Franklin Cibula shot dead

Retired attorney Franklin Stephen Cibula was found at his home Tuesday with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Sources said he was found about midday and pronounced dead a short time later at a local hospital.
Police were investigating all possibilities, including homicide.
A relatively quiet investigation had been under way into possible felony-level financial fraud, sources said.
Cibula, 66, 67, was a fourth-generation Redding resident with a distinctive personality and a colorful history. He once survived major injuries from driving a car off a cliff near Tahoe, had served a bit of misdemeanor time in jail over a fracas with authorities on behalf of a client, and had various other encounters through the years. He had heart surgery about a year ago.
He had spent some four decades practicing business, personal injury and real estate law.
His son, Mark Cibula, 40, also is an attorney and serves on the Shasta County Board of Supervisors. His law office said the family would have no comment at this time.
Father and son practiced together for many years until Franklin Cibula resigned from the state bar earlier this year rather than face disciplinary charges.
Franklin Cibula attended local schools, graduating from Shasta High in 1958. He was further educated at Princeton University and UC Berkeley School of Law.

Kelly, This is truly a shock that such a notable man, Franklin Cibula has died.
My sympathy to his family. What a loss of a fixture in Shasta County in the court rooms.
He’ll be missed.
